How to Track Writing Time, Pace, and Reading Time with Momentum
WriteinaClick automatically tracks how much time you spend writing in each book, and estimates how long your readers will take to read it. Everything is collected in Momentum. No stopwatch, no manual logging.
Where to Find Momentum
Momentum is a section of Book settings for the book. Open it either way:
- In Write, choose Tools > Momentum from the menu bar.
- Open Book settings and click Momentum in the sidebar, under Writing.
Reading-time estimates also appear in the Table of Contents in Write, next to each chapter's word count.
What Momentum Shows
Key numbers at the top
- Total writing time - every minute you've actively written in this book, summed across all sessions.
- Words written - words you've added, with the net change underneath.
- Reading time - how long the whole manuscript takes to read, with its current word count.
- Active days - days with real writing.
- Current streak - consecutive days you've written.
Idle time is excluded automatically: if you leave a tab open but don't type, those minutes are not counted, so you get an honest figure.
Writing calendar
A calendar where each square is one day. Darker squares mean more writing time that day. This is the quickest way to see your writing rhythm at a glance.
Pace & projection
- Last 7 days - words you added this week, and your words per active hour.
- Projection - if you set a target word count in Book settings > Goals, Momentum shows how many days it will take to reach it at your current pace, and how many words remain.
Best writing hours
A chart of the hours of the day when you write most, with your most productive hour called out, so you can plan sessions around it.
Reading Time Estimates
Reading time is estimated at 250 words per minute, which is the average adult silent-reading speed. You'll see this estimate in three places:
- Table of Contents - next to each chapter's word count.
- Chapter title bar - the reading time for the whole book, next to the word count.
- Momentum - the Reading time number at the top.
Short chapters show minutes (e.g. "12 min read"), longer chapters show hours and minutes (e.g. "1h 20m read").
