How to Import Your Manuscript (Word, PDF, EPUB, Scrivener, Sudowrite) to WriteinaClick

Bring existing work into WriteinaClick so you can edit, organize, and enhance it with Robin. This guide covers supported formats and what to expect during import. For full Scrivener or Sudowrite projects, use the dedicated guides linked below. The importer walks through ZIP / companion files and lets you preview structure before anything lands in your book.

Supported Formats

WriteinaClick supports importing from these file types:

FormatExtensionsNotes
PDF.pdfText is extracted; formatting may vary
Word.doc, .docxPreserves structure and formatting well
EPUB.epubCommon for ebooks; chapters are detected
RTF.rtfRich text format; good for basic formatting
OpenDocument.odtLibreOffice / OpenOffice documents
Kindle.mobi, .azw3Text is extracted; formatting may vary
Scrivener.zipBack up the project as a ZIP file; see dedicated guide
Sudowrite.zip or .docx + CSV exportsFull Sudowrite projects; see dedicated guide

Plain text (.txt) and Markdown (.md) files are not accepted. The maximum file size is 50 MB.

Choose the format that best matches your source. Word (DOCX) and EPUB typically give the most reliable structure for single-file manuscripts. Scrivener and Sudowrite imports add a guided flow when you pick those sources in the import window.

How do I import a file into WriteinaClick?

You can import a manuscript in just a few clicks. Every import creates a new book; you cannot import into a book that already exists.

  1. On Home, click Start a new book (or Import a manuscript). This opens your books page.
  2. Click Import / Upload Book.
  3. Under One-time import, choose File Upload. (Google Docs and Notion appear under Import & keep in sync.)
  4. In Upload Book File, click Select File and choose your file.
  5. Fill in the book details, then click Upload Book.
  6. The import runs in the background. Track it in the Jobs menu (the clipboard icon in the top bar), and click View Book when it is done.

Your content appears as chapters based on how the file was structured. You can reorganize chapters after import.

What Happens During Import

Book Details

Before the upload starts, you fill in the book details:

  • Book Title - Filled in from the file name; change it if you like
  • Language - Helps with proofreading and Robin assistance
  • Book Type and Main Genre - Required
  • Sub Genres (Optional) - Up to 2
  • A series to add the book to, if you want one

Chapter Detection

The importer tries to detect chapters using:

  • Headings (e.g., "Chapter 1", "Part Two")
  • Page breaks or section breaks
  • Table of contents in the file
  • Structural markers in EPUB and DOCX

Front and back matter such as the table of contents, copyright page, dedication, acknowledgments, appendices, glossaries, and "about the author" pages are detected and skipped. The prologue and epilogue are kept.

If chapters aren't detected as expected, you can split or merge content manually after import.

Content Processing

  • Text is extracted and placed into chapters.
  • Basic formatting (bold, italic, lists) is preserved where possible.
  • Images may not always transfer; check your manuscript after import.
  • Complex layouts (columns, tables) may be simplified.

For best results, use a clean, well-structured source file with clear chapter headings.
