How to Import a Scrivener Project Into WriteinaClick
If you write in Scrivener, you can bring your project into WriteinaClick and continue working with your existing structure.
How do I prepare my Scrivener project for import?
Back up your Scrivener project as a ZIP file. The ZIP keeps your binder structure and document order so WriteinaClick can map them to acts and chapters automatically.
- Open your project in Scrivener.
- Go to File > Back Up > Back Up To...
- Turn on the Back up as ZIP file option.
- Choose a location and save.
Then, in WriteinaClick:
- On Home, click Start a new book to open your books page, then click Import / Upload Book.
- Choose Scrivener.
- Click Select .zip File and choose the backup.
- Fill in the book details, then click Import from Scrivener.
The import creates a new book. It runs in the background, and you can follow it in the Jobs menu (the clipboard icon in the top bar).
What Gets Imported
Chapters and Acts
Only the Draft folder of your binder is imported. Research and Trash folders are left out.
- Binder structure - Folders and documents map to acts and chapters, depending on how deeply they are nested.
- Text content - The body of each document is imported as chapter content.
- Order - The order in your Scrivener binder is preserved.
Metadata
- Titles - Document and folder names become chapter titles.
What Does Not Transfer
- Synopses - Not imported.
- Comments, annotations, and footnotes - Comments are removed. Annotation and footnote markers are removed, and their text is kept inline.
- Formatting - Basic formatting (bold, italic, underline, lists) is preserved; complex styles may be simplified.
- References and links - Internal Scrivener links may need to be rebuilt.
- Custom metadata - Scrivener-specific fields are not imported.
Tips for Best Results
- Clean structure - Use a clear hierarchy (for example, Part, then Chapter) in the Draft folder before you back up.
- Consistent naming - Name documents clearly so they map well to chapters.
- Back up the full project - Back up the entire project, not just a selection, to preserve structure.
- Review after import - Check that chapters landed in the right places and merge or split as needed.
Importing from Scrivener lets you keep your workflow while gaining WriteinaClick's Robin tools and organization features.
