Set a Goal for Your Book with the Book Journey

The Book Journey turns a per-book goal into a finish line you can see. Set a target, and WriteinaClick shows your progress, projects when you'll finish at your current pace, and quietly celebrates as you hit each milestone.

This is different from your account-wide streaks and achievements, which track your habit across every book. The Book Journey is about this book's finish line.

Set your goal

Open Book settings for the book and switch to the Goals tab. You can set:

  • Target word count - how long you want the finished book to be. Leave it blank to use a genre-aware suggested default, so you don't have to guess.
  • Target chapter count (optional) - how many chapters you're aiming for.
  • Finish by (optional) - the date you'd like to finish by, picked from a date field.

Click Save, and the goal drives your progress bar and finish-date projection.

Progress and finish-date projection

Once you have written enough to register progress, the Table of Contents in Write shows a small progress bar and percentage toward your word-count goal. The Goals tab also shows a projected finish date based on your recent writing pace: a realistic read on whether your deadline is in reach, and a nudge if you need to pick up the pace.

Milestone celebrations

As your word count climbs, the Book Journey marks the quarter points (25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% of your target) with a brief corner celebration. Finishing your first full chapter gets its own beat. Each milestone appears at most once per book, so it stays a treat rather than noise.

Just-in-time tool hints

While you write, the Book Journey occasionally points you at a tool that fits what you're doing right now. For example, it may point you at Version History when you rework a lot, or offer to Ask Robin what's next after you finish a chapter. At most one hint appears per writing session, and each can be dismissed.

You can turn the Book Journey off with Show book journey in Tools > Confetti & Celebrations if you'd rather write undisturbed (see Goals & Achievements).

On mobile

On the mobile app, set the same goal under Book settings > Goals (target word count, target chapters, and deadline). Write shows a Book Journey banner for milestones and tool hints. The finish-date projection is a web feature for now.
