How to Write One Chapter at a Time (Chapter Mode)

Chapter mode lets you work on one chapter at a time in Write. The writing canvas shows only the current chapter, so you can focus without distraction.

To switch to chapter mode, click the page icon at the right of the chapter title bar (Chapter View when you hover it).

How Chapter Mode Works

In chapter mode, the canvas displays a single chapter. When you switch chapters, the document swaps to the new chapter. Your previous chapter is saved automatically before the switch, and the new chapter loads in its place.

This mode is ideal when you want to:

  • Polish or revise a specific chapter
  • Draft new content for one section
  • Work on a chapter in isolation without seeing the rest of the book

Use the chapter navigation (sidebar or chapter list) to move between chapters. Each time you select a different chapter:

  1. Your current work is auto-saved
  2. The canvas loads the selected chapter
  3. The document view updates to show only that chapter

Because only one chapter is visible at a time, navigation is a deliberate change of context: you're switching to a different part of your book.

When to Use Chapter Mode

Choose chapter mode when you want focused, single-chapter work:

  • Editing and revision: Tighten prose, fix continuity, or refine dialogue in one chapter
  • Drafting new chapters: Write a new chapter from scratch without scrolling through the rest of the book
  • Targeted feedback: Get Robin assistance or analysis on a specific chapter
  • Reducing cognitive load -- Work on a manageable chunk instead of the full manuscript

If you prefer to see multiple chapters at once and move between them without swapping the document, use Book Mode instead.
