App Updates

The mobile app is updated through the App Store on iOS and Google Play on Android. If automatic updates are on for your device, new versions install in the background.

Occasionally the app asks you to update. When that happens, you'll see one of two prompts.

The "Update available" banner

A banner at the top of the app says Update available. The app keeps working, so you can write, read, and sync as usual.

  • Tap Update to open the App Store or Play Store and install the new version.
  • Tap Later to hide the banner. It comes back the next time you start the app.

The "Time to update" screen

A full screen titled Time to update says this version is no longer supported and asks you to update before continuing. It cannot be dismissed.

Tap Open App Store (iPhone and iPad) or Open Play Store (Android). Install the update, re-open the app, and sign back in if asked.

Why required updates exist

We use them sparingly, and only when an older version of the app would otherwise:

  • Save data in a way the service can't read back correctly.
  • Lose changes silently.
  • Crash on perfectly normal data.

In other words, the alternative is worse. Updating is the safest path forward.

What to do if the update isn't available yet

If the App Store or Play Store says "Open" instead of "Update", the new version may still be reaching your region. Wait a few minutes and retry. If it still doesn't appear after an hour, contact support.
