Open or Create Your First Book

Your first time in the app

After you sign in for the first time, a short setup helps you start your first book. You can begin from a new idea, or tap I already have a draft to bring in a manuscript you wrote elsewhere. At the end, tap Open my book. There is no skip, so finish setup to give your book a place to live. Completing setup on the website does not unlock the app; you finish setup once on each device type.

Open an existing book

Once setup is done, you land on Home. Every book in your active workspace appears on the shelf.

Tap a book's card. That book becomes active and Write opens to the chapter you were last working on (synced across devices when you're online).

Create another book later

  1. Tap the Start a new book tile on Home, or open the book selector at the top of Home and tap Create new book.
  2. Pick how you want to start: Guide me, I know what I'm doing, or Surprise Me (Surprise Me needs a Premium or Pro plan).
  3. Fill in Book title, Author name, Language, Book type, and Main genre. You can change these any time in Book settings.
  4. Tap Create book.

Your new book opens in Write with Chapter 1 ready to draft.

To bring in a manuscript instead, open the book selector and tap Import / Upload. You can upload a file (.docx, .doc, .pdf, .epub, .rtf, .odt, .mobi or .azw3, up to 50 MB) or import from Scrivener, Sudowrite, Google Docs, or Notion. Every import creates a new book.

Where books are saved

Every change is saved automatically. There is no Save button. Online, changes go to your account; offline, they stay on the device and sync when you reconnect. See Offline Mode.

Switching between books

Use the book selector (or return to Home and tap another card). Research, Write, Edit, and Publish always use the active book.

Switching workspaces

If you belong to more than one workspace, open the Account tab and tap the Workspace card, then pick a workspace in Switch workspace. Home reloads with that workspace's books. See Workspaces on Mobile.
