Proofreading (Grammar, Spelling, Style)

Proofreading in WriteinaClick helps you catch grammar and spelling issues while keeping your voice intact. You choose when it runs, and you choose which kinds of suggestions you get. Suggestions are tailored to your style instead of forcing generic rules.

Where Proofreading Lives

The Edit page is proofing's home, and the only place a proofread runs. Open Edit on the book path when the writing is finished and you want it checked. You tick the chapters you want, or click Proof whole book, and the run happens on our servers: progress shows inline, you can leave the page, and we notify you when it is done. See Edit: Proof and Polish for the full walkthrough.

While you are drafting, the editor gives you spell check instead. The Spell check toggle in the editor's toolbar underlines misspelled words as you type, the way your browser does everywhere else. It is on by default and the setting is remembered per book. It catches spelling, not grammar or style. For those, finish the passage and run a proofread from Edit.

Proofreading never starts on its own. Nothing is checked until you ask for it.

What It Checks For

A check looks for:

  • Spelling: Misspellings and typos
  • Grammar: Subject-verb agreement, tense consistency, punctuation, and more
  • Style: Common patterns that might weaken your prose

Results from a run collect into a reviewable list on the Edit page, where you accept or ignore each one.

Language Support

Proofreading works across multiple languages. The language is set in your Book Settings and proofreading adapts automatically, with no extra configuration needed.

For English books, you can also choose your specific variant (US, UK, Australian, or Canadian) so that spelling rules match your dialect.

The Proofreading with Robin Pass

Alongside the rule-based checks, Robin's part of the pass considers your writing style and the voice profile assigned to your book. It can:

  • Respect your voice: Avoid suggesting changes that flatten your tone
  • Understand context: Distinguish intentional style from errors
  • Explain the fix - Each suggestion says what it found, so you can judge it

This helps you polish your work without losing what makes your writing yours.

Viewing and Applying Suggestions

Every suggestion is yours to take or leave. Nothing is applied to your manuscript unless you say so.

  • On the Edit page, each suggestion shows the passage, the proposed fix, how serious it is, and which chapter it came from. Apply puts the fix in; Dismiss keeps your original.
  • A dismissed suggestion moves to Ignored suggestions in Proofing settings, where you can restore it, and it does not come back in later runs.
  • Some fixes can only be made in the chapter itself. When that happens, the suggestion tells you to open the chapter in the editor.

You can work through them one at a time or in a sitting, whichever suits you.

Personal Dictionary

Add words that the proofreader might flag but that you use intentionally, such as character names, invented terms, dialect, or jargon. Open Proofing settings on the Edit page, go to the Advanced tab, and add them under Personal Dictionary. While you draft, you can also right-click a word underlined by Spell check in Write and choose Add to dictionary. Once added, those words are treated as correct and won't trigger spelling suggestions.

Use the personal dictionary to keep your vocabulary while still catching real typos.

Configuring Proofreading Settings

You can adjust how proofreading behaves:

  • Categories - Turn types of suggestions on or off on the Editing Categories and Proofreading Categories tabs
  • Picky Mode - On the Advanced tab, ask for more detailed suggestions, including style improvements

Open Proofing settings from the Edit page to set these for a run. Which categories of Robin suggestion you receive depends on your plan: the free plan gets Robin's grammar suggestions, and paid plans add clarity, style and tone.
