How to Use Robin to Edit and Improve Your Writing
Robin can suggest changes to your text, and you decide what lands. Robin never changes your manuscript on their own: every suggestion waits for you to keep it or undo it.
How Editing with Robin Works
Robin starts every chat in Robin Mode, which is advice only, with no edits. To get suggested changes:
- Open a chapter in Write and open the Robin chat panel.
- Click the + button beside the message box.
- Choose Edit Mode ("Robin can suggest changes - you decide what lands").
- Ask for the change you want. Selecting a passage first tells Robin exactly which text you mean.
The chat panel header shows Edit Mode or Robin Mode, so you always know which one is on. Edit Mode is not available while a book is frozen, and a chat that uses a skill stays talk-only.
Writing Tools
When you ask about your prose in chat, Robin can run several writing checks and talk you through what they found:
Word Frequency Analysis
See how often you use certain words. Identify overused terms and get suggestions for variety.
Show vs. Tell Detection
Find passages that tell instead of show. Robin highlights opportunities to make moments more vivid and immersive.
Dialogue Extraction
Extract dialogue from your prose to review how characters speak and ensure each voice is distinct.
Readability Scoring
Check how readable your text is. Get feedback on sentence length, complexity, and clarity.
Pacing and Voice Checks
Ask about pacing, or whether a passage still sounds like you. Robin can point out shifts and suggest ways to keep your voice steady.
Requesting Specific Edits
You can ask for edits in natural language. For example:
- "Make this paragraph more concise"
- "Rewrite this dialogue to sound more natural"
- "Fix the passive voice in this section"
- "Add more sensory details here"
Be as specific as you like. Robin uses your instructions and your voice profile (if assigned) to suggest changes that fit your style.
Visual Feedback
When Robin suggests an edit in Edit Mode, it appears inside your chapter, marked as a suggestion from Robin:
- Your current text, marked with a minus sign
- Robin's suggested text, marked with a plus sign
Nothing in your chapter changes until you choose.
Reviewing and Accepting Edits
For each suggestion, you can:
- Keep - Put Robin's suggested text into your chapter
- Undo - Throw the suggestion away and keep your original text
- Copy the suggested text, if you want to use part of it yourself
- Reply in the chat to ask Robin to try again with different instructions
You decide which edits stay. Robin suggests; you approve.
