Voice Reader
Voice Reader reads your manuscript aloud with natural-sounding voices. Words highlight as they are spoken so you can follow along. It is useful for catching awkward rhythm, repeated phrasing, and dialogue that does not sound like something a person would say.
You can start playback from Reading Mode or from Write while you work on a chapter.
Where to find it
- Reading Mode - Open the book in Reading Mode and click the Read aloud button in the reader toolbar. Choose Read Selection, Current Chapter, or Full Book. If you stopped part way before, Resume from where you stopped also appears. The same menu lets you pick a Voice and a Speed.
- Write - While drafting a chapter, use the Read aloud button in the Listen group of the Write toolbar. Choose Read selection or Read full chapter, and pick a voice and speed from the same menu.
While audio plays, a small player lets you go back or forward 10 seconds, change the speed, jump to a point, or Stop, without blocking your page.
Following along
As audio plays, the words on screen highlight as they are spoken so your eyes stay synced with what you hear. If you scroll or switch passages, use the controls to reposition playback.
Voices and plans
Reading a chapter or the whole book aloud needs Premium or Pro. Both plans have the same voices. Each plan includes a monthly listening allowance: 300 minutes on Premium and 1,200 minutes on Pro.
Speeds range from 0.75x to 2x.
Resume across sessions
In Reading Mode, WriteinaClick remembers where you stopped listening, so you can pause and come back later and pick up near where you stopped with Resume from where you stopped. The resume point is saved in the browser you listened in, so it does not carry over to another device or browser.
Tips
- Listen to a chapter end-to-end before you revise dialogue-heavy passages.
- Combine Voice Reader with Reading Mode's typography settings for a comfortable review pass.
