Text-to-Speech

Listen to your book read out loud. Useful for catching awkward sentences, taking your prose for a walk, or just enjoying the work in a different mode.

Listen needs an internet connection and a Premium or Pro plan.

Start playback

In the reader, tap Listen at the bottom of the screen. The app shows Preparing audio while the first part gets ready (tap Cancel to stop waiting), then starts from the top of the current chapter.

The text is not highlighted as it is read.

Write has no read-aloud controls; see Playback while you Write.

Controls while listening

  • Pause and play to stop and continue.
  • Skip back and skip forward move to the previous or next section of the chapter. A long chapter shows which section you are in, for example Section 2/5.
  • Speed cycles through 1x, 1.25x, 1.5x, and 2x each time you tap it.
  • Stop ends playback.

Stopping, or changing to another chapter, ends playback. Tap Listen again to start the chapter from the top.

Background playback

By default, Listen keeps playing when you leave the app or lock the screen. A Now Playing card appears on the lock screen and in the notification shade (Control Center on iPhone) so you can pause or resume without reopening WriteinaClick.

On Android, the card needs notifications. If they are off, the reader offers Open settings so you can turn them on, or Not now.

To stop audio when the app goes to the background, open Account > Preferences > Listening and turn off Continue audio in background.

Voice

Listen uses one reading voice. There is no voice picker in the app.

What it can't do

  • It does not save an audio file. There is no export to MP3 yet.
  • It does not work offline.
