Import & Export Overview

WriteinaClick reads the common manuscript formats and writes finished files back out. Import works the same way on the web and in the mobile app. Export offers more formats on the web. The detailed step-by-step how-to lives in the platform-specific docs because the buttons and dialogs differ.

Supported formats

Import (your file → a WriteinaClick book)

  • DOCX / DOC (Microsoft Word)
  • PDF
  • EPUB
  • RTF
  • ODT (OpenDocument text)
  • MOBI / AZW3 (Kindle)
  • Scrivener (as a .zip of the project bundle)
  • Sudowrite (project ZIP, or a merged Word manuscript plus the Characters, Outline, and Worldbuilding spreadsheets Sudowrite exports)
  • Google Docs and Notion (connect your account and pick a document)

Plain text (.txt) and Markdown (.md) files can't be imported. Files can be up to 50 MB. Every import creates a new book.

Imports preserve chapters and basic formatting. Footnotes, complex layouts, and embedded media are simplified.

For Sudowrite-specific steps (which export option to pick and how to review the preview), use Web → Sudowrite import.

Where to do it

  • Web app: every import source and every export format. See Web → Importing, Web → Scrivener, Web → Sudowrite, and Web → Exporting.
  • Mobile app: import from File Upload, Scrivener, Sudowrite, Google Docs, or Notion, using the same file formats as the web. Export EPUB, PDF, Word, or Plain text from Publish. When the file is ready, your phone's share sheet opens so you can save or send it. Exporting needs an internet connection.

Series exports

If a book belongs to a series, you can choose between an omnibus (all books concatenated into a single file with shared front matter and back matter) and a bundle (one file per book, packaged as a .zip in reading order). Series export is available on the web only.
