Glossary

The vocabulary used across the docs and the apps, in one place. If a term ever feels ambiguous, this page is the source of truth. For the product philosophy and navigation map, start with A Home for Authors and The Path for Your Book.

Home

The shelf and continue-writing surface. Open books, see progress, and choose what to work on next. Not where you draft chapter prose (that's Write).

Research

The spine destination for thinking beside the manuscript (Robin in research mode and Story Hub reference), before or between drafting sessions.

Write

The spine destination where you draft the manuscript. Chapters, formatting, and the writing canvas live here. When docs say "open Write," they mean this destination.

Edit

The spine destination for proofing and polish (spelling, grammar, style passes) on a chapter or the whole book. Distinct from drafting in Write.

Publish

The spine destination for exporting finished files, opening Reader, and sharing with beta readers. Larger packaging and distribution work is still arriving. See Coming for Your Book.

Book path

The main destinations around a book: Home · Research · Write · Edit · Publish. Silent guidance, not a forced tour. See The Path for Your Book.

Active book

The book you currently have selected. Research, Write, Edit, and Publish all operate on that book. Switch books from the book selector in the navigation.

Book settings

Per-book utility. On the web it has Book, Voice, Series, Goals, Momentum, and Freeze. The mobile app adds Collaboration (guest links), Sync, and Danger zone. Not a step on the book path.

Book

The top-level container for a manuscript. A book groups everything else: acts, chapters, the writing voice, notes, and reader settings.

Act

An organizational layer between a book and its chapters. Most books have a single narrative act and you'll never see it labeled. The app only shows act labels when you have two or more narrative acts. Optional prologue and epilogue acts pin to the very top and very bottom of the book.

Chapter

A logical section of a book. Chapters are the unit you read, draft, and navigate. Inside a chapter the writing canvas presents one seamless document.

Passage

An informal name for a piece of a chapter: a paragraph, a moment, a beat. We use "passage" rather than a more technical term so the docs stay readable.

Workspace

The container for everything you write. Every account has one personal workspace that no one else can join, and may belong to one or more shared workspaces with other people. Books, voices, story hub entries, billing, and quotas all live inside a workspace.

Role

Inside a shared workspace, every member has a role: owner, admin, editor, commenter, or viewer. Each role grants a different mix of read, edit, and management permissions. See Roles.

Seat

Any member of a shared workspace whose role is not viewer. Viewers never count as seats.

Voice profile

A description of how you write: your tone, pacing, point of view, vocabulary, plus optional writing samples. Robin reads it so the wording Robin suggests sounds like you. Robin never changes your manuscript text.

Story hub

The structured reference space attached to a book. It holds your worlds, characters, places, glossary terms, chapter notes, free notes, maps, and timeline events. It's the place to keep continuity straight.

Scope

A setting on each Story Hub entry that controls where it appears: book (this book only), series (every book in the same series), or workspace (every book in the workspace).

Reader mode

A clean, distraction-free view of your book that mimics how a reader would experience it. On the web, Reader mode needs a Premium or Pro plan. The mobile app's reader opens on any plan. Listening to your book read aloud needs Premium or Pro on both.

Robin

Your co-author inside WriteinaClick. Robin is referred to with they/them throughout the app and the docs.

Story map

A map image you upload to a book, with pins you place, label, and color. Pins can be linked to entries in your places so geography and descriptions stay connected.

Story timeline

An ordered view of your story's events arranged on tracks (lanes), for example a main plot and a subplot, or two points of view. A planning and continuity tool; it doesn't change your manuscript.

Draft from Book

A Robin action in the Story Hub that reads your manuscript and proposes new entries, map pins, or timeline events. You review the proposals as a checklist and apply the ones you want.

Sync from Book

A Robin action that reads your manuscript and proposes updates to your existing Story Hub entries to match what's written, catching drift. You review the changes before they apply. Your manuscript is never changed.

Writing canvas / editor

The drafting surface inside Write where you type and format chapter prose. Docs say editor only for this canvas, not for the app's home or navigation.

Coming for your book

A Concepts page that describes north-star capabilities still on the way (deeper Research, Write polish, deeper Edit, packaging, audiobook produce, publish and share). It is not the in-app What's New feed, and it does not document controls that are not in the product yet. See Coming for Your Book.

Book journey

A per-book goal (a target word count, chapter count, and optional deadline) that drives a progress bar, a finish-date projection (web), and milestone celebrations as you write.

Series

An ordered collection of related books (a trilogy, a saga, or shared-world standalones). Each book has a position in its series, and Story Hub entries can be scoped to the whole series.

Ink

WriteinaClick's engagement currency (measured in Inkdrops). Earned by building a writing habit and referring friends, and spent on perks in the Ink store, such as a Robin Boost, a Readiness Check, editor themes, and streak freezes. It is never bought with money.

A private link that lets someone read a book without using a seat. There are three levels: Read only, Can comment, and Can suggest edits. Read only and Can comment links need no account. Can suggest edits is set on the web, and the reviewer signs in to send suggested wording. Every link expires (1 to 365 days) and can be revoked at any time. See Guest Reviewer Links.
